This artwork displays a stereotype of black women and how they are working maids or cooks in the kitchen and I chose this artwork because this is a stereotype that affects my background as an African-American. Initially, black women have always been stereotyped as black slaves or maids. In the picture, the black woman has on a long dress with oven mitts, which shows that she is a maid. Black women portrayed as maids only and not successful is very offensive to my culture. In the picture, she is shown as a worker and I can believe that black women find this especially offensive because this shows that they are nothing more than maids. To sum it all up, this picture is very stereotypical and offensive for various reasons.

  1. What I notice in that artwork is the use of hybridity, the artist clearly have made a statement that may either shock the viewer or change one's perspective. That makes the artwork interesting but possibly controversial. Deanna.
